On-Screen Keyboard
This colour-coded QWERTY keyboard is a visual aid only. Type on your real keyboard; the matching key lights up. Colours show which finger normally presses each key. Other layouts (AZERTY, Dvorak and so on) differ.
Finger colours: little finger, ring, middle, index (both hands share colours), and the thumbs for the space bar.
What Is a Keyboard Speed Test?
A keyboard speed test measures how quickly and how accurately you type a given piece of text on a keyboard. You are shown a passage, you type it, and the tool compares your keystrokes to the passage. The two headline numbers are words per minute (WPM) and accuracy. A keyboard speed test is essentially the same thing as a typing speed test; the terms are used interchangeably, and your result always depends on the language, passage, duration, punctuation and scoring method of the specific test.
How This Test Calculates Your Score
Every measurement here uses one method, so you can compare attempts fairly.
| Metric | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Gross WPM | characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes | Raw speed. One "word" is defined as five characters, including spaces. |
| Net WPM | (characters typed − incorrect characters) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes | Speed after subtracting characters that currently do not match the passage. |
| Accuracy | correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100 | The share of typed characters that match the passage at the same position. |
Characters are compared position by position. Characters you have not typed yet are never counted. Backspace corrections are respected: if you fix a mistake, it stops counting as an error. Time is measured from your first keystroke using the system clock, so a busy or inactive browser tab does not distort the result. Very early in a test (under three seconds or fewer than five characters), WPM is hidden because it would be misleading.
Gross WPM versus net WPM
Gross WPM rewards raw speed. Net WPM penalises mistakes. If you type 200 characters in one minute with 10 wrong, gross WPM is 40 and net WPM is 38. Always compare gross with gross and net with net.
How to Improve Your Keyboard Typing Speed
Accuracy first
Rushing creates errors, and fixing errors costs more time than typing carefully. Build smooth, correct movements, and speed follows gradually.
Learn the home row
Rest the left fingers on A S D F and the right fingers on J K L ;. Thumbs rest on the space bar. Return to these keys after each reach.
Look at the screen
Looking at your hands trains slow, visual searching. Use the on-screen keyboard briefly to learn positions, then stop checking.
Keep a steady rhythm
Even keystroke timing beats bursts and stalls. Slow down slightly until the rhythm feels easy.
Short, regular sessions
Ten to twenty focused minutes a day usually works better than one long weekly session. Take breaks and keep your shoulders and wrists relaxed.
Review mistakes
Note which letters or patterns you miss repeatedly, then use the Practice Accuracy button to drill them.
Small drills you can try
- Home row: asdf jkl; asdf jkl; fads lass flask
- Upper row: qwer uiop type write pour equip
- Lower row: zxcv nm,. zinc even band move
- Capitals: Alice Bob Carol Dan Eve Frank
- Punctuation: Yes, it is; no, it isn't. Really?
Keyboard Speed Test vs Typing Speed Test
A keyboard speed test generally measures how fast you type using a keyboard, and "typing speed test" is the broader name for the same kind of assessment. They are not different technical measurements. What changes your number is the test itself: language, passage difficulty, punctuation, duration and scoring method. A mobile thumb-typing result is also not directly comparable with a desktop benchmark.
Timed vs Untimed Practice
Use 15 or 30 seconds for quick warm-ups and 60 or 120 seconds for a more stable measurement. Longer tests show your sustained pace; short tests are more affected by luck. Untimed practice removes pressure, which is ideal for learning finger placement and cleaning up accuracy.
Who Benefits From Keyboard Practice?
- Students: faster note-taking and essays, and less time spent on typed assignments.
- Office and data-entry workers: numbers, punctuation and consistent accuracy matter as much as raw speed.
- Programmers: brackets, symbols and indentation need dedicated practice (try the Programming Text exercise).
- Writers: a steady rhythm helps you keep up with your thoughts.
Common Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| More mistakes when typing fast | Speed outpacing control | Drop pace by 10–20% until errors fall. |
| Looking at the keyboard | Positions not memorised | Home-row drills; cover your hands with a cloth or look away. |
| Two-finger typing | Habit | Relearn slowly with all fingers; expect a temporary dip. |
| Losing rhythm | Hesitation on hard letters | Practise tricky letter pairs; keep timing even. |
| Weak punctuation | Rare reach keys | Use the Punctuation Practice exercise. |
| Confusing gross and net WPM | Different formulas | Compare like with like. |
| Inconsistent results | Different passages, tiredness | Repeat tests under the same conditions. |

Reading Your Results Responsibly
Track progress by comparing similar tests: same duration, difficulty and category. Expect natural variation between attempts; the trend over weeks matters more than any single result. No test can promise a particular WPM.
