Why You Should Stop Looking at the Keyboard

When you look at the keyboard, your eyes jump between the keys and the screen all the time. Each jump costs a fraction of a second and breaks your focus. Over a full day this adds up to lost time, more mistakes and tired eyes and neck. People who type without looking keep their eyes on the screen, notice errors the moment they happen and read ahead while typing.

Touch typing means you know where every key is by feel, because each finger has its own area. It is a skill built by repetition, not talent. Anyone can learn it with slow, accurate and regular practice.

๐Ÿš€ Faster

Touch typists commonly reach 50 to 80 WPM, while hunt-and-peck typists stay near 20 to 30.

๐ŸŽฏ More Accurate

Watching the screen lets you catch and fix errors immediately.

๐Ÿ˜Œ Less Strain

Your neck and eyes stay in one position, so long sessions feel easier.

๐Ÿ’ผ Better Jobs

Most office, data entry and transcription jobs expect touch typing.

The Finger Map and Home Row

Place your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. Your thumbs rest on the space bar. The small bumps on F and J help your index fingers find home without looking. After every key press, your finger returns to its home key.

7 Steps to Type Without Looking

Sit correctly. Back straight, feet flat, elbows near 90 degrees and wrists floating, not resting on the desk.
Find the home row. Feel the bumps on F and J, then rest your fingers on ASDF JKL;.
Learn rows slowly. Master the home row, then the top row, then the bottom row, adding two or three keys at a time.
Return home. After each key, bring the finger back to its home position.
Cover the keys. Use a cloth or a keyboard with blank keycaps so you cannot peek.
Prioritise accuracy. Slow down until errors almost vanish. Speed comes later on its own.
Practise daily. Twenty minutes every day beats two hours once a week.
๐Ÿ’ก Don't worry about the slowdown. Your speed will drop for one or two weeks while you stop looking. After that it rises above your old speed.
