How the Speed Checker Works
Choose a timer and a text level for your check.
Start typing; the clock and the needle begin with your first key.
See gross WPM, net WPM, accuracy and the zone your needle reached.
Add your name and the date to download a PDF certificate.
The checker uses the standard formulas. Gross WPM equals typed characters divided by five, divided by the minutes used. Net WPM removes one word for every five wrong characters per minute and cannot fall below zero. Accuracy equals correct characters divided by typed characters, times 100, and shows a dash before you type. In timed checks more text is added as you go, so the clock alone ends the run.

What Is a Typing Speed Checker?
A typing speed checker is a simple tool that measures how many words you can type in a set time and how many of those words are correct. You read a passage, type it as accurately as you can, and the checker turns your keystrokes into numbers such as words per minute and accuracy. It takes less than a minute, needs nothing but a keyboard, and gives you a clear starting point for improvement.
This page adds a live speedometer to the test. As you type, the needle moves with your net speed, so you can see at a glance whether you are in a slow, steady, quick, fast or elite zone. The zones are a visual aid for practice and are not official grades, but they make progress easy to notice from one check to the next.
WPM, CPM and Accuracy Explained
| Measure | What it means | How it is calculated here |
|---|---|---|
| Gross WPM | Words per minute before penalties | Typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes |
| Net WPM | Speed after mistakes are deducted | Gross WPM minus wrong characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, never below 0 |
| CPM | Characters per minute | Typed characters ÷ minutes |
| Accuracy | Share of correct characters | Correct ÷ typed × 100 |
| Error count | Wrong characters in the run | Typed characters that differ from the passage |
A word is counted as five characters, including spaces, so long and short words are treated fairly. Other websites may count real words or use a different penalty, which is one reason scores differ between checkers.
How to Check Your Typing Speed Fairly
Compare one-minute runs with one-minute runs, not with five-minute runs.
Texts full of numbers are slower, so compare like with like.
Use the keyboard you really type on every day.
Tired hands and a busy mind lower every score.
Type a few easy lines before your first scored run.
Average three runs for a steadier picture than any single one.
What Affects Your Typing Speed?
Typing speed is not a fixed number. It rises and falls with the keyboard you use, how familiar the words are, how tired you feel and how much pressure you put on yourself. Easy, common words are faster than long technical ones, and text full of numbers or symbols is slower for almost everyone, including experienced typists.
Nerves matter too. Many people type more slowly when they know a timer is running, which is why a relaxed warm-up helps. If your first check is lower than you hoped, treat it as a baseline, repeat it on another day and look at the average of several runs.

Speed Zones on the Gauge
The colors on the speedometer match these zones. They are general practice guides, not official standards from any school, employer or authority:
| Zone | Gauge color | Net WPM | Suggested focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow | Red | Under 25 | Find the keys and build accuracy |
| Steady | Amber | 25 to 40 | Smooth rhythm and posture |
| Quick | Green | 40 to 60 | Punctuation and capitals |
| Fast | Blue | 60 to 80 | Numbers, symbols and long runs |
| Elite | Indigo | 80 and above | Consistency over several minutes |
The needle moves to the net speed you are reaching at that moment, so it may swing during a run. The result panel shows your final figures.
After You Check: How to Improve
Slow down by about ten percent until red characters become rare.
Practice short 30-second runs and watch the needle climb gradually.
Type to a steady count so the needle holds one zone.
Drill the Number Check passage on its own before mixing digits in.
Stretch, rest and finish the session early; try again tomorrow.
Change passage types and recheck after a few days of varied practice.
Seven-Day Typing Improvement Plan
| Day | Time | Check and goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 min | Three baseline checks; note your average |
| 2 | 20 min | Accuracy drills on the beginner texts |
| 3 | 20 min | Short 30-second runs to watch the needle |
| 4 | 20 min | Intermediate texts and one 2-minute check |
| 5 | 25 min | Number Check and Mixed Symbols texts |
| 6 | 25 min | Long Check text, then review the red characters |
| 7 | 15 min | Three final checks; compare averages and download your certificate |
Check, improve and recheck: the loop matters more than any single day of the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typing speed checker?
It is an online tool that measures how fast and how accurately you type a given text and reports the result as words per minute and accuracy.
How accurate is this typing speed checker?
It follows a clear formula, so it is consistent from check to check. Results can still differ from other websites because each uses its own word and penalty rules.
What is a good typing speed?
It depends on your goals. Many people feel comfortable between 40 and 60 words per minute, but the zones on this page are practice guides, not official standards.
Why does the needle show net WPM?
Net WPM subtracts a penalty for mistakes, so it reflects usable speed better than gross WPM, which counts every keystroke.
How many times should I check my speed?
Run it three times and use the average. A single run can be affected by nerves, fatigue or an unusually easy text.
What is CPM?
CPM means characters per minute. Divide it by five to get a rough words-per-minute figure.
Does a longer test give a better result?
A longer test gives a steadier average but also reveals fatigue. Use one minute for daily checks and three to five minutes to test stamina.
Can I get a certificate for my result?
Yes. After a check, enter your name and date and download a PDF. It is a self-generated practice certificate, not an official qualification.
Is my result stored anywhere?
Only in this browser, using local storage. Nothing is sent to a server, and you can clear the history at any time.
Do I need a special keyboard?
No. Any keyboard works, but use the one you normally type on so the result reflects your real speed.
