What Does a Typing Test Result Show?

After a typing test, you usually see several numbers at once: words per minute, accuracy, errors, time and sometimes consistency. Together they describe how fast, how clean and how steady your typing is. Reading them correctly helps you decide what to practise next, instead of chasing speed blindly.

One important point is that different websites calculate scores slightly differently. The core ideas, however, are always the same, and once you understand them you can compare any two tests with confidence.

Key Terms Explained

Tap a term to see what it means and how it is calculated.

WPM (Words Per Minute)

The standard speed measure. One "word" always equals five characters, including spaces, so long and short words are treated fairly.

WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Gross WPM vs Net WPM

Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM subtracts mistakes, so it shows your real, usable speed. Employers care most about net speed.

Net WPM = Gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes)

Accuracy

The share of characters you typed correctly. 95% means five out of every hundred characters were wrong, which is a lot of fixing in real work.

Accuracy = (correct characters ÷ total typed) × 100

Errors

Any wrong, missing or extra character compared with the text. Some tests count uncorrected errors only, while others also count corrected backspaces. Check the rules of your test.

Consistency

Shows how steady your speed was across the test. Big swings suggest rushing and slowing down. Steady rhythm usually leads to fewer errors and higher net speed over time.

How to Read Your Score

If your result shows…It means…Do this
High gross, low net WPMYou are typing fast but making many errors.Slow down and drill accuracy.
Accuracy below 95%Too many corrections will be needed at work.Practise clean, slow lines daily.
Low WPM, high accuracySolid technique, but speed can grow.Add timed sprints gradually.
Uneven consistencyYou rush and then hesitate.Type to a steady rhythm.
Balanced, 97%+ accuracyHealthy, job-ready typing.Push speed in small steps.
💡 Why scores differ: texts, time limits and error rules change from test to test, so the same person may see a 5 to 15 WPM difference. Compare results from the same test over time for the truest picture.

Turn Your Results into Progress

🎯 Track Weekly

Take a test once a week and note net WPM and accuracy.

🐢 Accuracy First

Aim for 97% before raising speed targets.

🔁 Fix Patterns

List the words you miss and drill them daily.

⏱️ Short Sprints

Use one-minute tests to build speed without fatigue.

  1. Take a baseline test and write down every number.
  2. Pick one goal, such as accuracy to 97%.
  3. Practise 20 minutes daily for two weeks.
  4. Retest and compare with your baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts all typed words, while net WPM subtracts errors, so net WPM shows your real usable speed.

How is typing accuracy calculated?

Correct characters divided by total characters typed, multiplied by 100.

How is WPM calculated?

Total characters typed divided by five, then divided by the minutes taken.

Why is my WPM different on different tests?

Tests use different texts, time limits and error rules, so results can vary by 5 to 15 WPM.
