Reading Your Result: Worked Examples

Speed in words per minute equals characters typed divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy equals correct characters divided by characters typed, multiplied by one hundred. Spaces and punctuation count as characters.

• Example 1: 280 characters in one minute is 56 words, so 56 WPM. If 266 were correct, accuracy is 95 per cent.
• Example 2: 540 characters in two minutes is 108 words, divided by two minutes, so 54 WPM. If 529 were correct, accuracy is about 98 per cent.
• Example 3: 120 characters in 30 seconds is 24 words in half a minute, so 48 WPM.

Longer tests give steadier results. Other tests may score differently, so compare only within the same test.
